It’s the next morning; Kai is bored at the house with nothing to do. Kai and Charity are eating breakfast at the table.
I just don’t get it? What am I supposed to do with my life? Asks Kai.
“Well,” responds Charity. “you might want to think of something pretty fast cause we’re getting pretty behind on the bills.
How can that be?” Kai asks surprised.
“Well we didn’t have any savings and the whole point of you taking that assignment in Toronto was so we could pay down our debt. But now that you’ve quit… I can’t make all the bills. Between tuition, food, utilities and all the other expenses, something had to go. I didn’t want to bother you with it. But things are reaching the red alert stage.”
Kai thinks for a long time.
“Look you keep handling it.” Says Kai desperately. “I’m too confused to deal with it right now. Ok. Please don’t be mad.”
“Kai we can’t keep acting like nothings happening. I mean we can’t just ignore the world!”
“The world!” snaps Kai. “Just what is the world anyway? How can we deal with something we don’t even really understand? Huh? Oh forget it! I’m going to bed!”
“But it’s ten in the morning!” Says Charity incredulously.
“I don’t care!” snaps Kai totally frustrated.
Dejected, Kai puts in a Japanese flute cd and jumps in bed in the middle of the day. And sulks. It’s a spring day. There is a gentle pitter-patter rain. And as he turns to face a large plate glass window, he falls into an altered state of consciousness. A beautiful scene outside of the plate glass window is reveled. It is a beautiful natural scene straight out of a Japanese garden. There is a tree and the light is hitting the leaves just right and the wind is brushing the leaves just right.
Kai sleepily hits the play button on the cd player and suddenly the room is transformed into a beautiful Japanese garden. Kai is still in bed protected from the rain under a beautiful Japanese gazebo. He is shocked at what he sees. He stops the music. Suddenly we are back in the bedroom. He plays it and again we are in the garden. He does this a few times realizing it’s triggered by the music. Eventually he keeps it playing and is then fully surrounded by a virtual garden of Eden with the music playing in the background. He sits up and looks around wondering what has happened.
“Wooooww!” exclaims Kai.
Charity opens a magical door to the garden we see the rest of the house through it. She is amazed.
“Oh my god! It’s happening!” says Kai.
“Wow! Is this what you we’re talking about!” says a shocked Charity.
She runs and jumps in the bed with him. Now they are both there, the door closes and disappears.
“It’s amazing isn’t it?” Says Kai calmly.
“Yes it is amazing! More people need to see this!” Says Charity.
“I got it!” exclaims Kai.
Inspired, Kai jumps off the bed. The scene quickly changes back to the bedroom and the window. Charity is disappointed.
“Hey! What did you do that for?” she yells.
Kai is frantic, hurrying as not to miss a fleeting moment. He grabs the cd out of the cd player and runs though the house. He grabs his camera and then runs into the kitchen. He grabs a plastic bag. He grabs some scissors. He carefully cuts a hole in one end of the bags then grabs a pile of rubber bands dropping a bunch on the floor. He is making a mess. He puts the bag around the camera and ties it with a rubber band. He rummages through a drawer; he finds a tape and puts it in the camera.
“Where is my tripod!” screams Kai.
“I don’t know I think the kids were playing with it.” Responds Charity annoyed.
“The kids!” screams Kai.
He runs to the kids room. Goes into a totally messy room. He goes into a disastrous toy closet. He flings toys out. We hear a Telitubby make a sound as it hits the floor.
“Ugh oh!” Yells the Telitubby.
“Here it is!” screams Kai triumphantly.
Kai comes out of the closet victorious and proud with the tripod. He puts on a raincoat.
“What are you doing!” says Charity exasperated.
He quickly puts the camera on the tripod and then runs out into the rain.
“Your camera’s gonna get wet!” she yells after him.
We see Charity look out the door at him with a worried look
“What are you doing! Will you tell me please!” she says worried.
“Love calls!” exclaims Kai.
“Love calls? What are you talking about?”
Kai ignores her and Kai starts filming all kinds of weird things. There is a clock outside dripping in rain. It speeds up in the background and things slow down to slow motion in front of Kai. He is in another dimension of consciousness. He starts to film: Water dripping off of leaves. The grain of the wet deck. Water dripping off the swing set. Pink Flowers growing from the cracks of the deck. The leaves swinging from the trees.
Finished, Kai runs back in the house and frantically hooks the camera up to the TV, puts the cd in and turns it all on. Charity waits.
“You’ve been out there for hours!”
“What!” replies Kai. “No way it was just ten minutes at the most.”
Kai fiddles with the TV. They both look at the TV as he presses the cd button. Suddenly the TV comes to life with the scenes Kai just filmed and again they are transported to a magical Japanese garden, this time in their living room.
“Wow! You did it!” exclaims Charity.
“I don’t know what’s happening Charity. All I know is that something is moving though me trying to show me something and I’m going to follow it and see where it leads.”
“And the beauty, look it’s all around us!” says Charity calmly.
With that they look around them at the beautiful garden they are in.
“Yeah!” replies Kai, totally mesmerized by the beauty.
They are both in total bliss when… there is a knock at the door. The vision breaks and suddenly they are thrust back into reality. Back in the real living room. They look at each other disappointed.
“Who could that be!” says Charity, annoyed.
