Chapter 5

It’s the next morning; Kai is bored at the house with nothing to do. Kai and Charity are eating breakfast at the table.

I just don’t get it? What am I supposed to do with my life? Asks Kai.

“Well,” responds Charity. “you might want to think of something pretty fast cause we’re getting pretty behind on the bills.

How can that be?” Kai asks surprised.

“Well we didn’t have any savings and the whole point of you taking that assignment in Toronto was so we could pay down our debt. But now that you’ve quit… I can’t make all the bills. Between tuition, food, utilities and all the other expenses, something had to go. I didn’t want to bother you with it. But things are reaching the red alert stage.”

Kai thinks for a long time.

“Look you keep handling it.” Says Kai desperately. “I’m too confused to deal with it right now. Ok. Please don’t be mad.”

“Kai we can’t keep acting like nothings happening. I mean we can’t just ignore the world!”

“The world!” snaps Kai. “Just what is the world anyway? How can we deal with something we don’t even really understand? Huh? Oh forget it! I’m going to bed!”

“But it’s ten in the morning!” Says Charity incredulously.

“I don’t care!” snaps Kai totally frustrated.

Dejected, Kai puts in a Japanese flute cd and jumps in bed in the middle of the day. And sulks. It’s a spring day. There is a gentle pitter-patter rain. And as he turns to face a large plate glass window, he falls into an altered state of consciousness. A beautiful scene outside of the plate glass window is reveled. It is a beautiful natural scene straight out of a Japanese garden. There is a tree and the light is hitting the leaves just right and the wind is brushing the leaves just right.

Kai sleepily hits the play button on the cd player and suddenly the room is transformed into a beautiful Japanese garden. Kai is still in bed protected from the rain under a beautiful Japanese gazebo. He is shocked at what he sees. He stops the music. Suddenly we are back in the bedroom. He plays it and again we are in the garden. He does this a few times realizing it’s triggered by the music. Eventually he keeps it playing and is then fully surrounded by a virtual garden of Eden with the music playing in the background. He sits up and looks around wondering what has happened.

“Wooooww!” exclaims Kai.

Charity opens a magical door to the garden we see the rest of the house through it. She is amazed.

“Oh my god! It’s happening!” says Kai.

“Wow! Is this what you we’re talking about!” says a shocked Charity.

She runs and jumps in the bed with him. Now they are both there, the door closes and disappears.

“It’s amazing isn’t it?” Says Kai calmly.

“Yes it is amazing! More people need to see this!” Says Charity.

“I got it!” exclaims Kai.

Inspired, Kai jumps off the bed. The scene quickly changes back to the bedroom and the window. Charity is disappointed.

“Hey! What did you do that for?” she yells.

Kai is frantic, hurrying as not to miss a fleeting moment. He grabs the cd out of the cd player and runs though the house. He grabs his camera and then runs into the kitchen. He grabs a plastic bag. He grabs some scissors. He carefully cuts a hole in one end of the bags then grabs a pile of rubber bands dropping a bunch on the floor. He is making a mess. He puts the bag around the camera and ties it with a rubber band. He rummages through a drawer; he finds a tape and puts it in the camera.

“Where is my tripod!” screams Kai.

“I don’t know I think the kids were playing with it.” Responds Charity annoyed.

“The kids!” screams Kai.

He runs to the kids room. Goes into a totally messy room. He goes into a disastrous toy closet. He flings toys out. We hear a Telitubby make a sound as it hits the floor.

“Ugh oh!” Yells the Telitubby.

“Here it is!” screams Kai triumphantly.

Kai comes out of the closet victorious and proud with the tripod. He puts on a raincoat.

“What are you doing!” says Charity exasperated.

He quickly puts the camera on the tripod and then runs out into the rain.

“Your camera’s gonna get wet!” she yells after him.

We see Charity look out the door at him with a worried look

“What are you doing! Will you tell me please!” she says worried.

“Love calls!” exclaims Kai.

“Love calls? What are you talking about?”

Kai ignores her and Kai starts filming all kinds of weird things. There is a clock outside dripping in rain. It speeds up in the background and things slow down to slow motion in front of Kai. He is in another dimension of consciousness. He starts to film: Water dripping off of leaves. The grain of the wet deck. Water dripping off the swing set. Pink Flowers growing from the cracks of the deck. The leaves swinging from the trees.

Finished, Kai runs back in the house and frantically hooks the camera up to the TV, puts the cd in and turns it all on. Charity waits.

“You’ve been out there for hours!”

“What!” replies Kai. “No way it was just ten minutes at the most.”

Kai fiddles with the TV. They both look at the TV as he presses the cd button. Suddenly the TV comes to life with the scenes Kai just filmed and again they are transported to a magical Japanese garden, this time in their living room.

“Wow! You did it!” exclaims Charity.

“I don’t know what’s happening Charity. All I know is that something is moving though me trying to show me something and I’m going to follow it and see where it leads.”

“And the beauty, look it’s all around us!” says Charity calmly.

With that they look around them at the beautiful garden they are in.

“Yeah!” replies Kai, totally mesmerized by the beauty.

They are both in total bliss when… there is a knock at the door. The vision breaks and suddenly they are thrust back into reality. Back in the real living room. They look at each other disappointed.

“Who could that be!” says Charity, annoyed.

Chapter 4

It’s later in the day and Kai is walking down the street, he passes a homeless guy on the corner. The man has a sign that says. “You have a gift” Kai hands some money to the stranger.

“Sorry this is the only gift I have for you today.” Says Kai meekly.

“Don’t give me that bull!” retorts the man. “You have lots of gifts you’re just not sharing them! Don’t be so stingy!”

Shocked, Kai give the guy a weird look and continues walking.

Coincidentally as Kai walks he sees a storefront and a flier that says “Learn how to make your dreams come true” Curious, he peaks in and sees a group of people at some kind of seminar. It’s being taught by Yvonne, a middle-aged woman with dreadlocks who is dressed like an artist. Kai cautiously enters and takes a seat in the back row. The woman acknowledges Kai and then continues her lecture.

“Look people, don’t do things just for the money. Do what you love for no other reason than for the pure joy of it. Let money be an afterthought, not the only thought. We’ve all got to find something that feels right, where we feel alive. Not dead like a bunch of walking zombies. The key is to do what inspires you and not give into fear. Don’t let fear be the motivator. Fear will never get you to the happiness you seek only fun, play and most of all joy, these are the keys.”

A student raises her hands.

“Well that all sounds good and all,” says the student. “but what about paying the bills how do we handle that in the meantime?”

“Just let Love show you the way.” Replies Yvonne.

“Um, I’m sorry but, that’s crazy!” retorts another student.

“Yeah, Sounds like a bunch of bull to me.” says another.

Love hugh, tell that to my landlord.” Say another. “I can hear it now.”

“Where’s the rent?“ says another imitating the landlord.

“Ugh, Love has it.” replies another sarcastically.

Everyone starts laughing. They all get up and leave disgusted.

“Call me when you have something real to teach.” Says one while leaving.

“I want my money back!” says another.

Soon most of the students have left. Yvonne yells after them.

“Remember trust love!”

Yvonne, unfazed, looks and sees only Kai and one other student, Lance. Lance is a tall thin man in his 50’s. Dressed in a Native American Style. He has long grey/brown hair. Lance takes out his guitar and start playing a song making fun of the situation.

“I once had a dream and everyone screamed. Do your joy … Have fun and play … And if you’re lucky … You’ll rule the day … Yeee haawww!”

“Very funny. Very funny.” Says Yvonne, a little embarrassed.

She claps and laughs at the song.

“Hey I don’t know about them but what you said really helped me.” Kai blurts out. “It was just what I needed to hear.”

There is an awkward moment of silence.

“Hey would you guys like to get some coffee?” asks, Yvonne.

“Yeah sure.” Responds Kai.

Lance plays a song as they leave.

“And the crazy people … Went out for coffeeeeee!”

They all laugh as they leave.

Eventually they enter a nice urban coffee house. Kai, Yvonne and Lance are all seated around a coffee table. Yvonne starts off the conversation.

“Don’t worry Kai things will work out, you just have to trust. I was just like you once, working in the corporate world…”

I used to work at a desk full of papers. Then one day it just seemed like people were throwing more and more paper on my desk. And then this guy comes over and unloads a huge box of papers right on my desk.

“You mean he dumped them?” Asks Lance?

“Yeah my desk was completely inundated with this huge pile of paper. I thought they were joking but they were serious!”

“I was like, Hey!!! What the hell are you doing! And they laughed at me can you believe that!”

“Anyway, I was totally lost, you know chasing that golden carrot. Then this lady in a suit comes by my desk.”

“Yvonne, guess what!” the woman screams. “We’re giving you a raise honey!”

I was shocked and dumbfounded. The money was tempting but then one day I just couldn’t stand it anymore.”

“I was driving home one day stopped at a light when I just lost it. I just started screaming; ‘What the hell do you want me to do? What is it!!!!!!’”

“And guess what happened. Right then my car died. I mean right at that very moment.”

“I saw smoke coming up from the hood and I tried to start it but it just wouldn’t start. I banged my hands on the dashboard totally frustrated and got out.”

“I was so angry I just left it there blocking traffic and everything. Ohh, those people were so mad at me.”

“I was walking down the side of the road when all of a sudden this woman pulls up next to me and offers me a ride.”

“I was a little surprised but got in the car.”

“It turn’s out she owned an art supply store. And I love art but I just never thought it was something I could do, you know. Coincidence? I don’t think so, more like destiny.”

“The woman gave me a nice looking card as she drops me off. We exchanged numbers and the next thing I know I’m working at her store!”

“Then I‘m taking painting classes. Something I always wanted to do. But over the years I had just smushed it down ya know. Till I got so into making a living that I pretty much forgot all about how to live!

“Anyway, to make a long story short. Now I’m a painter doing what I was truly born to do.”

“So see, in your darkest hour, when you feel like things couldn’t get any worse, just remember that what looks like the end might just be the beginning… Of your new life.”

“Wow that’s amazing,” says Kai. “We’ll that gives me hope man. Maybe this dream stuff can work.”

“Ya know, dream stuff is some of the most important stuff in the universe.” Replies Yvonne.

“I know one thing for sure, I can’t go back to another meaningless job. I’ve got to find my place in the world. I know it’s there somewhere.

“That place, is your plan G.” says Lance.

“Plan G?” Kai asks.

“Yeah, it’s there, patiently waiting for you.”

“So what does the G stand for?”

“You’ll have to figure that one out yourself.”

“Ok Mr. smarty pants what’s your story?” retorts Kai to Lance.

“Oh, I’m just your average nut case Californian living in a shack in the middle of the woods.”

They laugh.

“Oh good, thanks for tellin’ me. I’ll make sure I’m real careful the next time I look in my mailbox.” says Kai.

Lance lifts his hands up pretending to be Frankenstein.

“Be afraid, be very afraid!” Says Lance in a Frankenstein voice.

They laugh again.

“Yea, Yvonne’s knows the path. Same thing happened to me. Took me awhile, had to go around the block a couple hundred times but eventually I got it. We’ll all get it eventually. If not this life then maybe the next.”

“Well like most of us, my story starts with a bad day at work…”

“I was operating a forklift full of pipes. I accidentally ran too close to a wall and the pipes went banging all over the floor. The foreman come running over and started cursing me out.”

“I got down from the forklift and angrily walked away. He yelled that he was going to dock me for every dent, or some such nonsense.”

“So I went for a walk in the woods to let off the steam ya know. Which is what I usually do when things go crazy.”

“I’m walking along this trail in these beautiful woods near my job when all of a sudden this beautiful blue humming bird stops right in front of me. Startling me half to death.”

“I took notice cause it just so happens that my totem is a humming bird. Then I heard this beautiful angelic voice say as clear as I’m talking to you now. ‘Set them free with my music.’”

“I thought I was hearing things at first and put it out of my mind and continued walkin’.’

“And then it happened again. The bird came again in front of me. And again it said. ‘Set them free with my music.’ All of a sudden I felt this incredible urge to write.”

“But I didn’t have a pen nor pencil so I ran around frantically looking for a pen. I finally borrowed a pen from some passersby who must have thought I was half crazy. But then I didn’t have anything to write on. after desperately searching for a piece of paper I just said forget it and started writing diligently on my pants leg. Several people walked by and I know they thought I was crazy!”

“I was suddenly hearing the most beautiful song I had ever heard and I had to write it down.”

“And that’s how I got my first song. And the rest is history (he holds up guitar).”

“Wow. That was really inspiring stuff.” says Kai.

“But, it’s just so scary you know.” says Kai.

“I know. It is scary.” says Yvonne.

Lance chimes in, “You know, they’re going to do everything in their power to stop you.”

“Who,” says Kai a little scared. “What are you talking about?”

“He doesn’t know.” Yvonne whispers to Lance.

“What?” says Kai.

Lance leans forward towards Kai.

“Just watch your back that’s all.”

“Remember,” says Yvonne. “No matter what, you’re not alone. It may seem that way, but your not.”

Lance’s eye’s get really big and then in a funny voice says,

“Yeah, welcome to the realm of the unknown!”

They toast their coffee.

“To Love and the unknown.” Says Kai with an uneasy voice.

Chapter 3

Kai barges in to his apartment startling his wife Charity.

“Oh honey good you’re home!” she says as he briskly walks past her.

She looks at him and quickly sees that something is wrong.

“What! What is it?” She asks pensively.

“Get packed.” Replies Kai in a determined voice. “We’re leaving.”

An air Canada 747 lands at an airport.

A taxi passes the entrance to an airport passing a sign that reads “Welcome to Houston Intercontinental Airport” like a short track racer it dances though the airport traffic makes a high speed stop. The driver quickly gets out, opens the trunk ready to greet his next passengers. There is a moment of silence, then a loud burst as a jet passes overhead. Then out of the doors burst a large family of 6 towing a ton of bags – It’s the True heart family newly arrived from Toronto.

“Man it’s hot!” Yells Charity.

Daddy,” A young girl calls to Kai. “I want to go back to Canada!”

“I know I know.” Replies an exhausted Kai.

The driver takes the bags Kai, Charity and their four children, Shani age 6, Khari age 3 and the twins, Mari and Kesi age 1 all hop in.

Riding in the back of a cab. Kai looks out the window, worried and despondent.

“What are we going to do?” he murmurs to Charity.

Charity grabs his hand.

“Hey, no matter what,” she says reassuringly. “I’m with you babe!”

She kisses him and Kai smiles at her.

It’s the next morning. Kai is getting in a small car in his driveway. He is dressed in a suit. He has his laptop and briefcase on his shoulder. Charity runs after him in a bathrobe.

“Hey!” screams charity. “You don’t want to forget this do ya?”

She hands him a white envelope.

“Yeah,” says Kai. “Thanks.”

“Are you sure this is what you want to do?

Kai pauses to think about it.

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

He pulls out of the driveway as Charity looking worried waves after him.

After taking the usually 45 minute commute though grueling traffic Kai eventually arrives at his place of employment and pulls his car in line behind a large procession of really nice cars pulling into the valet of a beautiful large tall gold office tower. BMWs, Mercedes, Lexus’s etc. The valets are letting out businessmen and women in really nice suits. The valets are dressed like 1950’s style gas attendants in impeccable uniforms. When it’s Kai’s turn, the valet opens the door but Kai doesn’t move, instead him eyes a white envelope on his dashboard. He looks at it a long time.

“Sir?”, the valet asks.

Kai takes a deep breath, purposely grabs the envelope and gets out of the car. He takes his bag and laptop and follows a long procession of people into a foyer heading towards the entrance. He passes a large window and through it watches a bunch of landscapers diligently cutting the grass outside. He stops at a wall and bangs his head against it in frustration.

“I can’t do this man.” He says to himself doubtfully. “I just can’t do it.”

Suddenly Kai catches what appears to be a flash of light in the corner of his eye. He looks up in horror to discover the mysterious being he was beginning to think was just a dream. The man, totally relaxed is leaning against a wall eating, what appears to be, some kind of snack.

“Woa!” shriks Kai in total shock. “You again! Oh no! Not again! Not here! Not now!”

Kai looks around to see if anyone else has noticed.

“Cold feet hugh?” Asks the man.

“Look,” says Kai in a scared voice. “I have bills to pay, responsibilities! do you know how many people would kill for a job like this!”

In his anger Kai grabs the man by the shirt and yells in his face. The man just stands there.

“Look!” Kai screams. “I can’t do it man I just can’t do it!” “look at all these successful people!” Kai says as he looks at the passers by. “I can’t give this up!”

“Successful?” replies the man calmly.

Suddenly the man snaps his fingers and everything transformed in to a hellish world of roman style slavers whipping the line of once glamorous business executives who are now slaves dressed from the roman era, their suits now rags.

The line of successful cars in the valet line has transformed into a line of gutted wreaks. Each car is a rusting hulk that looks like it’s been burned all the way though. You can still recognize the hood ornaments though. Instead of driving the car each diver, dressed in rags, is now pushing the cars. They are having a horrible time. There is fire and smoke and screams. It’s a scene straight out of Dante’s inferno. It’s hard to push the cars because there are no tires, just rusted bent rims. The drivers moan as they attempt to push the cars. Next to them are slave drivers with big emblems written on the back of their tunics that say BANK, CREDIT CARDS, MORTGAGE COMPANY, TAXES they are whipping the people mercilessly. The slaves yell horrible screams as they are hit.

Now the procession of successful business people that was going into the building has been transformed in a similar way. The people are now dressed in suits ripped to slave rags. They still carry their brief cases but they are dragging them. The bosses are there now whipping them. The people are in chains and there are long chains pulling them into the buildings.

Then Kai, who can’t believe what he is seeing, takes a look outside though the window where the landscapers were. To his horror, the grass is now brown with dirt patches and weeds. There are patches of fire and smoke. The landscapers too are now slaves also in chains being forced to dig and plow the ground. One man is pulling the plow himself, but he is dragging a ton of consumer goods; Tvs, vcrs, dvd players, stereos etc. Another man is pulling a refrigerator on its side full of rotten food. They are wearing the rags of the new uniforms we saw earlier. Their bosses yell and scream at them and whip them. The bosses shirts say; PAY DAY LOANS, RENTAL CENTER, PAWN SHOP, THE LAND LORD, They groan in pain.

The man takes another handful of his snack and eats it.

“OK stop it ok!” Kai yells in shock and a panic. “I get it! You can stop now! Please just stop it!”

The man then snaps his fingers again and the world is transformed back in an instant to its original state.

“Oh my god!” says Kai, relieved. “Oh my god!”

The Man offers him some of the snack. Kai looks at him like he’s crazy.

“Ok I get it man.” Yells Kai. “Ok! I get it!”

Kai starts heading to the elevator in earnest.

“Do you really?” Says the man calmly.

“You don’t have to convince me!” Yells Kai as he walks away. “Ok! I said I get it! Just don’t do that again ok! Please.”

The man doesn’t hear him because he’s looking in his bag of snacks. He shakes the bag a couple times in search of another juicy morsel.

Kai runs into an elevator crowded with office workers. In the elevator, Kai looks wearily at the people now, he sees them in a way he has never seen them before, he is scared for them. The elevator opens and he hurriedly runs out past everyone. The people are annoyed at him for rushing out so rudely. Kai runs into a glass office door with the words. WORLD WIDE CONSULTING, LLC on the front.

He hurriedly runs to the reception desk.

“MARY where’s Joan.” Asks Kai out of breath. “I have to speak to her right away.”

But just as Mary is about to answer. Her boss walks up with an angry look on her face.

“Mary!” Yells Mary’s boss.

Kai takes a double take because in front of his eyes the boss has transformed into a Roman slave driver.

“Get to work slave!” Commands Mary’s boss.

The boss whips Mary who has also been transformed into a slave wearing rags etc. The room is darker, there is lightning and fire and thunder.

“Please have mercy on me!” Pleads Mary.

Just as quickly, the scene is back to normal. Kai stares at the two with wide eyes. Totally mesmerized at seeing the situation for what it really is.

“Mary!” yells the Boss still dressed as a slaver. “Didn’t I tell you to get me those reports! Where the hell are they!”

Kai looks on in disbelief.

“Who are you looking at!” says the boss while giving Kai the evil eye.

Suddenly, in an instant, her eyes turn red and evil with flames reflected in her pupils, they quickly return back to normal. Everything has somehow turned back to normal.

Mary is still terrified as if she was still a slave. She cowers.

“I’m sorry, I, I really am.” screams Mary, terrified. “Please, please, please don’t be mad, I really, really need this job ok.”

The boss turns to leave but glances at Kai as if he knows something.

“I don’t care if you need this job!” her boss screams back as she leaves. “Just get me my damn reports!”

Kai and Mary both look on incredulously as the boss leaves. Eventually they regain their composure.

“Hey Mary,” says Kai. “I’m really sorry about all that. I didn’t mean to get you in trouble. Look can you just give this to Joan for me please.”

Kai hands her the envelope.

“What!” No! Kai! You can’t!”

“Yeah I have to. This place is pure hell!”

Kai then heads for the door.

Mary calls after him.

“I wish I had your courage.”

“You do!” yells Kai as he leaves.
